Is Period Correct better than Time Machine?
I enjoy DosBOX on my laptop. Feels like old hardware, but maxed out with all the best hardware emulation that I can use for a cross-hardware experience in programming.
Still one of the most helpful videos about this topic.
This shows that pentium 4 at its best was worse than a p3.
You need to put the screen closer, thanks Don
overclock.exe no longer available.
A game engine on Steam, CopperCube 5, actually has a software rendering option if you want to make a game with that (DirectX 8 is also available)
Could you please update the description text so the proper links once again is available?
Well this video is now really old, versions have changed, so it's best to check the documentation of the latest version 🙂
@@philscomputerlab I Find it delightful that you still reply to a comment on a 8 years old video. You are amazing, and it feels like i am listening to a friend every time i watch your videos.
@@vardekpetrovic9716 Thanks for the kind words!
@@philscomputerlab I really like that you now show your face in the later videos, it brings a closer connection to the feeling of familiarity. I understand that you did not want to be as public in the past. But i find it to be a definite upgrade. As i mentioned earlier, it feels less like a tutorial than an full experience when you see the person talking to you. Last week i was commuting by bus and someone in the back rows was watching a video about dos games on her phone, and i instantly recognized your voice.
I need help with mountjng my HDD drive to install all the files, please. I can not find the option to mount when I right-click on the HDD.

I miss good old builds like this
Anything you might recommend to play baldurs gate 3 with decent visuals?
No idea of that game I'm afraid.
the 300a Celeron was a quarter of the price and would clock to 450mhz . my be nice to see a comparison between the two.
I've covered that one in a dedicated video 🙂
Whats the red ati card on your desk ?
Can you tell me the time in the video?
Motherboard repairs : do you think maybe we could do some sort of collaboration there Phil? Also I'm finding a lot of retro motherboards (working) that I don't need including some really unusual ones...
Nobody ever loves near me and shipping stuff around is a pain in the neck and makes everything expensive and slow. I really need to learn some basics myself, practice on broken boards, that sort of stuff.
How you made Xp runs on this processor ? I tought it was support only to gen2(i7 2700k, i5 2500k) it is hard ? Im planing on build a machine almost like this one of yours.
It's shown in the video 😊
Just by changing the cores ? I tought it was a thing about drivers, not cores.
Oh my god Comanche, I remember playing this on the 486 and it chugged like you wouldn’t believe, I was a kid though so I didn’t really know performance or any of that so I was still into it lol. We got a pentium 133 down the line and it was a really nice upgrade for sure. Watching you play duke at 640 by 480 reminded me of my ever present struggle as a kid to hit 800 by 600, slight resolution bumps used to crush some games back then.

I have found with some after the fact research that a lot of the 80 series main boards still have drivers for XP, but my Z97 Fatality has like no drivers for XP. Everything works, I just can't use the LAN port, special sound card features, or get usb 3.0 speeds off the board. But that doesn't matter to me at this time.
Buying Dell Precision 690 for only $50 was the best thing I have ever done. I put in 8 core Xeon (2x4 cores), GeForce 8800 GTX and Sound Blaster X-FI XtremeGamer. It’s very future proof for 2006 run every XP games fast. Best Windows XP machine I have ever owned.
I just want to know how your vintage boards look so shiny & new? What do you do with them? Oh later in the video you show it! Kitchen sink....
I just got one of these today. Works great for DOS games on my 286! Only weird thing is I can't seem to get Windows 3.1 to work. Drivers install fine - show up as ESS Audio Drive and ESS MPU401 in the drivers menu in control panel - but no sound plays and the system sounds in the control panel are all greyed out.
Maybe the Windows 3.1 driver requires 386 enhanced mode?
You know, I never test Windows 3.1, so I don't know I'm afraid...
when i was young in the early 2000s i was told the best gaming motherboard is called DFI Lanparty and i have never seen you tried that board with these Athlon CPUs, why not?
The same thing happened to me back in late 1993 when I purchased a Desktop PC from an auction. It turned out the CPU was a DLC3 based IBM Blue Lightning 66Mhz processor which I understand was one of the earliest CPU's to enable clock doubling. Basically didn't have all of the 486 instructions so was effectively a super fast 386.. the Maths Co-Pro was recognised as a 80387. Most of the benchmarking & diagnostic software recognised it as a 486 class CPU.... the general performance was very fast for its time but running games apps that required the maths chip would have caused it to struggle comparing it to the Intel. In some aspects I gather it would have outperformed the Intel version. The rest of the system was fairly decent for the time VL Bus & Cirrus Logic Graphics so was able to play all of my games of that pre internet time period.
had a P4 derived celeron in a laptop, it was clocked at 2.4GHz I think and while it could do some heavy lifting, especially video playback, responsiveness was worse than Duron clocked at 800MHz...
can i achieve the same resort with "PCem"?
Companies like SIS, Cyrix, etc, should always be applauded. They allowed kids from poor working class backgrounds (like me) to get into computing. All gone now. It's become a refuge only for those who can afford it when you look at the obscene prices of GPU's, CPU's, motherboards especially. 15 years go $200 would have got you a top of the line DFI lanparty board with error code LED read out. Today $200 may get you an average performing entry level board and if you want the error code reader well that $2 part is "A PREMIUM FEATURE" that you wont get without trebling your motherboard budget. The rewards and incentives of capitalism over time to maximise profits via mergers and acquisitions over the decades has destroyed a lot of the value and innovation of the hardware industry over the last 25 years, same for gamming studios.
Could this emulate any Roland Soundfont accurately?
2:02 "All the pixels are the same size" Are they? Still look taller than they are wide to me.
Yea poor expression. All the pixels are identical in size is maybe a better description. Whereas with Openglnb, se are different sized / shaped.
What about 88AP5 cpu ?
? Context please, I'm not sure what you mean.
@@philscomputerlab I have a Wyse Tx0 with 88Ap5 CPU
The cd-rom drivers are not in the zip file.
Are you sure? Many have used this pack and not reported issues.
hello, is it possible to set 2 audio outputs at the same time in windows xp? both on the hdmi and the speaker output? (i use onboard audio card.)
Hmm I don't think so. Check if your HDMI monitor has a headphone port, you could use that?
Off topic but I have to ask, if England plays Österreich in the next round of Euro 2024, will you still support us English? 😂
Haha, I'll always cheer for Austria, but of course we don't stand a chance 😊
Next upgrade for the 3020. I was debating on getting one of these for $60 shipped or just using the RX6400 I have, but the card is going to be heavily underutilized in the system. The 550 is going to lose a little, but not a lot and is going to sit closer the ceiling for the system. I'll save the 6400 for a new SFF build.
Nice!
You could do a collaboration with some other UA-cam:er that focuses on repairing hardware.
How does a dual Xeon run?
As always, depends on the model, specifications and so on. But they are a solid option no doubt.
I know this is an old video. I was wondering if a ssd would really make a big difference over say a wd raptor sata hdd?
Yes, SSD beats mechanical drives no doubt.
I have got the same motherboard, and i have the same problem with the ISA ports. Sound card don't work on DOS 6.22 or Windows 98.
game name?

hi phil! im having problem with the second part of installation, there is a message that a file needed to be copied from iso is missing and asking to point the route of installation cd rom. the sata controller is on ahci mode
How does it stack up in 2024?
I don't think you'd be happy ...
Similar music in this nice video : 3Dfx Voodoo2 SLI System Review
This is now retro video about retro hardware lol
It was poor man’s deal back then, being significantly cheaper than tualatin celeron and duron, while performance was somewhere around pentium II 450 (1.5ghz model) with just as low as 99 bucks. I got my computer upgraded from 5x86dx5 133mhz that purchased in 1997 to celeron 1.4ghz in 2002 and it blitz, it wasn’t impressive for enthusiasm but it did run 90% of games when paired with mx4000 128mb (later upgraded to 9600xt). It is just not that bad to be honest…..
i just wanna build a window xp machine so i can play C&C generals and lord of the rings battle for middle earth
I have a Tandy 2500 SX-20, and both with the built in vga card, upgraded to 512kb, and a separate isa 16bit cards, they do not show up on most monitors. On an old 19" crt, i get gibberish on the screen. I have tried a Kanexpro vgarlhd converter to various LCD monitors, but to no avail. Nothing shows up but that it is out of resolution. Any ideas?
Hey Phill great content. Quick Question, Im about to embark on my own Retro build. Going AMD Athlon Slot A route (nostalgia) and i wanted to ask about the SD to IDE adapter vs a CF to IDE adapter. Have you tried these and are they faster than say the SD to IDE? i was looking at using a CF card that supports around 100MB/s read speeds, since the board will have ATA-100 or ATA-133 controller onboard I'd really love your input
I've used both on the channel! CF adapters are faster. I tend to use SD card for DOS projects, but for Windows 98 machines, like yours, I usually go with SATA SSD together with a StarTech SATA to IDE adapter. But CF should also work very well. Don't overthink things, start with what you have as you can always tweak things later. I've installed 98 on SD cards also, check my previous videos with a search, there should be a few on the channel!
@@philscomputerlabthanks for that Phil. I was looking at the sata option, maybe putting in a promise or highpoint pci to sata card but wanted the ability to remove the drive to put files on, so the CF or SD card seems the go for me. Thanks for the quick reply and will be looking forward to more content from you
@@camjohnson2004 CF have many small pins, be gentle when inserting into the Adapter and reader. Yea it's super convenient to connect them to a modern PC, load files easy as.
@@philscomputerlab oh yes I know. Back when I was doing hardware reviews I managed to damage the pins in the camera I was using for pics. After the 3rd time I scrapped it and went a camera with SD cards
